Excessive bacteria on teeth form a thin, sticky layer called plaque. Plaque bacteria live off the sugar in the foods we eat and create acids that eat away at tooth enamel, forming tiny holes that can develop into cavities. If it is not removed with regular brushing, plaque can also harden over time into a yellowish substance called tartar.
